Once again I am very thankful to Glenn Payne, Doug Graham, RC Kaiser and Ed Klimczak for all the work they do.

Also working independently and assuring us of a showcase site is Bethel.. Thanks!

Yesterday we re-routed some irrigation so that water could go to hose stations without irrigation being on.

Ramps were constructed so that equipment could be rolled in and our of the container. Area signage for “No Parking” was marked and installed. The day previous canoe gate chains were revised to hold gates open. Gate pennant flags added.

PS I leave for the mainland Thursday evening July 22 and return Aug 3 at Noon. Skip is in charge.

Glen Payne, Doug Graham, Bethel Kohn and I continued on after paddling to get a lot more of the irrigation work done. Bethel mostly advisory which was very important The two Canadian dynamos had me running to advise and ensure where stuff was going, getting tools, material and even a run to Kihei Ace hardware as they were installing non stop. We only have two areas left: finishing up my work along the south boulders and along the highway boulders Calvin was doing Kiawe clean-up.

I paddled with a fun group from Santa Barbara today. Water was super clear. Clair brought her truck and paddlers and visitors helped with the picnic table transport.

When we arrived at the site Calvin, Bethel and Mike Perry were already there digging and planting. Wow it is really taking shape. The plants are beautiful and add such a “our place” look to the site. I can feel the momentum. We were joined by Ed and Glenn. The table was put down next to the one already there that was chained to the chain link fence post. The second was chained to the first.

I made floor plates the evening before so that our meter pipe penetrations could be sealed. Ed put those down as soon as I handed it to him. Clair, Ed and I then went to Lei Park and transfer the bench backs and took down the paddle box. It sounds easy here but the builders used a box of screws on this bench. Glenn stayed back and helped with planting.

Upon our return with the paddle box Ed and Glenn put up he paddle box up immediately. These guys don’t fool around. They work so fast that I have to watch that they don’t do something extremely wild.

Glen and I cut the Maui Canoe Club bench boards and screwed in eyes and hooks and made the temporary sign system.

Slight back sprain prevented me from paddling this morning. Judy (Rhodesia) came late we both went to Kale’ia beach early. I showed Judy the site and what was planned. She covered the surface valve box while I modified the “U” clamp on the chain link fence gate because it appeared somebody rotated the clamp to get access. Glenn Payne from Vancouver showed up and asked if there was a 8:30AM paddle and if I would be there upon the paddle return. He handed me his membership form and annual fee. I had planned for an early day but he said he was ready. While waiting for his return I got out the lumber and did some drilling into the container wall for shelving. We already had spare wood. I did some design sketch and Glenn showed up. We fired up the generator built wood brackets and quickly put up 2 qty 8 foot long shelves. We put about 12 boxes on the shelves. Shelves are up! More floor room!

Dan Deknis and I arranged to meet at Kale’ia park at 7:00AM. To do the meter relocation. I woke earlier and decided to go to the park and shut of the water in advance of Dan’s arrival. The keys that were made for the lock at the main shut off at the condo didn’t work. I had to go back to my car and get my originals. I shut of the water, opened the toilet gate and toilet door and set up for the work. Dan arrived and we decided on the location for the meter in the container. Dan brought hole saws and we drilled holes in the floor for the pipes.

We started dry fitting the pipe and RC came by followed shortly by Ed Klimcak What a crew! We decided to change out the meter and install the new property border shut off in the buried box and do away with the above ground box that had been tampered with.

Ed put up the mounting boards for the paddle box and helped us as well. The piping relocations were not easy but we accomplished the task thanks to crew. It was good to be working with an old hand RC again and also to work with Dan fellow engineer and Board member. Ed the mural guy is always fun to work with.

PS Jeannie appeared and did raking as well as ensuring that we had cold juices.

Container shelf tomorrow?

I went to Kale’ia park today mainly to check inventory of stuff and make some measurements before going to Kahalui to buy material for water line relocation and to secure the picnic tables, and install frame work the paddle box

I found and Ed Klimczak and Bethel hard at work clearing the area of evasive species between the container and the ocean. The intent was to trim but I joined in and we couldn’t stop until; we cleared the whole area. Bethel has to get moving on planting there ASAP.

Ed and I discussed table position, securing the table, paddle box installation, PVC container installation.
Ed did more excavating for work to start 7 AM tomorrow with me , Dan, Ed, and perhaps RC.

I left to get materials for tomorrow, I returned about 3PM put the material in the container and secured the door with a new chain and two more locks at the handle . Dan and I discussed this yesterday.
I secured the picnic table to the fence post with a lock. I called Rainbow rentals to activate the toilet. I put in water they put in TP and chemical I bought paper towels and hand disinfectant waterless and put them in the toilet.

We have a portable toilet! It is installed and locked. The fence area is also locked and the toilet is leveled and anchored. It is from Rainbow Rentals $125 tax included per month with weekly service. Call in service is available at $35 tax included. The work crews prior to the 10th will have a place to go. The fence gate lock is the old combination. The key to the portable toilet is hanging in the container along with the dump bin key.

I dug up the old main line diversion to see about relocating the stub up so as not to interfere with the new picnic table location. I called Dan Deknis for a second engineering opinion and Board viewpoint. We decided to put the meter and shut off valve in the container. The existing box and location will remain with only a shut off valve. The container will have limited access with a separate combination thinker chain lock and two handle locks. 3 locks! The doors had been attempted to be open with the chain in tack.

The container combination will be known only to Captains, Board members, and planting people. Please note if the main container valves including irrigation are open the shut off in the box will function a separate irrigation valve will function also. The combination for this box is known to paddlers and they can activate water if the container is placed in open.

Dan and I will be doing piping modifications. Additional help would be great (RC).

I went to Kale’ia after paddling today. Nobody was there! I used the opportunity to paint and mount the beach access signs. Assembled drip feeder extensions and installed 10 of them. Need soaker type system.. I will check into that tomorrow. Re-organized the container. Labeled boxes with materials and tool types. Bethel and Mike Perry did a lot of garden work and clean up.

A some point soon I will remove my tools and material like 2 portable drills, drill bits, saws all, socket wrench sets, assorted pliers, etc. I think the club should purchase some of these and a few tool boxes. They have become indispensable. RC also has rakes, shovels , etc. perhaps I’ll take an inventory and make a buy list. This will occur after the 10th.

Things to (try to )) do before the 10th . All depends on help available.

Install turtle stagger fence (material at site) July 1,2
Finish beach access signage July 1
Canoe Landing Zone preparation July 3
Beach and site raking July 2 and 3
Tree planting and other July 5 and 6
Start potable toilet contract July 5
Main and irrigation PVC revision at container July 5. 6.
Sand and refinish Picnic Bench #1 July 6
Build shelf in container July 6
Buy rollers (see motion) July 6
Move picnic bench # 2July 7
Change out bus stop bench boards July 7
Move Paddle box and re-install at new site July 7
Use canoe work saw horses as no parking zones July 7
Site raking and set up July 9

Calvin continued to clear the final gate by removing sand and relocating it to the boulders. I worked at a rapid pace to mark out the irrigation hose before he buried it.
Later Bethel and I removed about a third of the shrubs left between the container and the ocean. We came to the conclusion that more space was required around the picnic tables. We made a tentative decision to mount the paddle box on chain link fence. On the Makai side.

We have a lot of green waste to get rid of.

I repaired the meter shut off box hasp. It was forced open and the valves on. My repair was done with material I had at hand. A better solution is required and I believe a better location. Any suggestions? I have to relocate part of the main and first I thing it should be located closer to the container perhaps in a steel job box.

After paddling I drove back to Kale’ia beach. Calvin and I did some raking and earth moving. I placed 16 of the 18 tires that Chris Stankis dropped off Sunday evening.

When we do tests the tires are in place or close enough. Numbering the gates from one to eight from south to north; all the beach slopes and access has been cleared with the exception of Gate 3. Gate One is reserved for the sail canoe. This gate has been widened and it is the closest to the container for adjustments.

I would like planting to continue so that I could run drip feeders to them before I forget where the main run has been placed, This is along the boulders from in front of the container continuing North to the end of the property.

After paddling, including nice surf in, I went to the site and met Mike and Calvin. Calvin was clearing the canoe gates and transferring material to low spots. Mike and I finished up the irrigation main run to the tee off point and cleared the area to the gated enclosure foe the toilet pump truck . We added some drip feeders and Mike had to leave. I continued leveling the loads Calvin was bringing. As I was about to quit due to appointments in Kahului Phil and Evelyn showed up. They continued the leveling process and I was free to go. Thank you Phil and Evelyn.

After an exciting wave and wind paddle I drove to the site with Mike Rineer. Shortly after our arrival we were met by Mike Elam and Mike Perry. All three Mikes at once!

Mike Perry has soil conditioner which was loaded into our fenced yard area. Mike Elam and Mike Rineer and I discussed location of the picnic tables and paddle box as it relates to paddling days and came to the conclusion it would be best to put these items next to the container. The container acts as a wind break. For events the picnic tables can be moved to the “social area”.

I was left with Mike Rineer who helped greatly in lower one gate on the wide gate system and also we put down 270 feet of irrigation hose primarily for the North end boulder area of the property.

Calvin came as we were leaving . He would finish that project and in particular bury the line where foot paths cross over.

I didn’t paddle today but came down to the beach to cut the chain on the picnic tables. It went very well two cuts one mine the other Don Couch. An additional old bike chain on the table was cut by Dan and I. The surprise is that Clair had driven her truck to the beach and she offered to take the table to Kale’ia . Clair, Joni, Dale, Dan and I did the carry work. The table is now at the new site. Some sanding and refinishing required. We left one table at Lei park.

After the delivery crew left I mowed the grass with an excellent powered Honda Lawn mower donated by Skip and Gloria.

I watered and finished installing the plaque on the replacement wood for the bench that we are leaving behind.

<description>The seas and oceans are where people get less contact may be considered the most tranquil and peaceful environment. Few things, like the sound of the waves and the songs of birds, can disrupt the tranquility of the sea. That&#039;s why many people choose to sail as a form of relaxation and meditation.</description>

Once again after paddling I went to Kale’ia Beach park was met by Kiko. Jack (Calvin’s dogs) and Calvin.

Calvin finished up the work on the sail canoe widening by removing the cut-off stump I left after chain sawing the old post down. I was prepared to leave it; but Calvin was correct in removing it before it became a hazard. A large clump of concrete was attached.

We completed all the work the chain link fence. The gate now has a lock on it with the old combination. I’ll call the portable toilet people to get a beat time to start the contract. We did not start to install the trellis material I bought yesterday to fortify the wind break fences.

We carved the recess for the sign in the new boards to replace the fence back at Lei Park.
Photos will be on email tomorrow.

The list remains:

We will have to get additional tires to the beach from Chris Stankis on the beach before July 10.

We will have to move the sail canoe over as a first canoe on the beach before July 10.

We need work crews to rake and clear landing zones for all canoes.

We need to cut the chain the picnic tables
We need to move the picnic tables on the 8th latest before fisherman start on the week-end.

We need to exchange bench boards before July 10th.

We need to relocate the paddle / waiver box

We may have to move some canoes prior to July 10th dependant on crews available.

We may have to take the tires off of lei park a day prior to the July 1oth paddle.

Let me know when and if you can help.

Once again after paddling I went to Kale’ia Beach park was met by Kiko. Jack (Calvin’s dogs) and Calvin.
Although we completed 2 / 3 of the work on the chain link fence we did not finish do to lack of some clamp parts. We decided to put in the expanded gate for the sail canoe. We did get that job done including shaping the beach for landing. Perhaps the North gate height will have to be adjusted. I drove to Kahului after this work and got the chain link fence parts as well as trellis material to fortify the wind break fences.

I did find my camera! See photos on subsequent email.

After paddling I went to Kale’ia Beach park and first met by Kiko then Jack (Calvin’s dogs). Calvin appeared and were also met by Mike Perry and Bethel. They were planting strips of some shoreline plant with purple flowers (I should know the name). It looked terrific.

Calvin really has done a great service in taking care of garbage removal. He did the very nasty task of cleaning up the mess at the cans just North of our border. We decided that we would put up “Trash” and “Recycle” decals that I had left over from our signage on a wood base plate. The trash situation down there has gotten better, perhaps this next step will help a bit more, Now there is no excuse from dumping stuff in the wrong bin. We shall see, Even if we have 80% success its better than it was.

Calvin also took care of the dumpster garbage, I left the key on a hook in the container. Now anyone with container access can get the key and open the dump bins.

After this Calvin and I put up the chain link mesh on the framework that was done previously. We completed 2 / 3 of the work and will finish tomorrow perhaps.

We intend to put remnant carpet (free) on the tires. They will be fastened on the folded over corners and screwed in with wood crews and fender washers.
