    1. I was going to say “Great job, Mike” but many beat me to it! I appreciate your work!
      ________________________Question:
Several weeks ago, we were sent a form to express our feelings/views on the provisinal paddler issue and the feeling that we are inundated with inexperienced paddlers. Has a decision been made reguarding the outcome of the questionaires? Any idea when we will be informed?

Again, thanks for all the time you put into our internet communication!!

    2. Laura, thanks for the feedback.

In regards to your question about the provisional paddlers the board discussed this topic again during our meeting last week. I will be sending the meeting minutes in the next few days and I will let the minutes speak for themselves rather than address that issue here.

    3. The Kapunas (wise elders) or old ones of MCC raced, even though it is the club that paddles for fun. The race was indeed a fun event! The 6 o’clockers also know as the Ninja paddlers raced the old guys from the 7:30AM paddlers (freight haulers) on the KCC quarter mile sprint course. All the paddlers age in a particular canoe had to add up to more than 400 years. Do the math ; The average age had to be about 67.
We (Shel’s crew) had two paddlers over the age of 80 and had a larger age number. The Ninjas had some old timers too, but they pride themselves a strong longer distance crew.

Well , the 7:30AM freight haulers Lost! But, by only 8 seconds. The Ninjas had to really work to cross the finish line ahead.

Well the end of race was celebrated at sea Champagne (supplied by the Ninjas) where both canoes cuddled opposite amas.

A great race for all. I hope to write a more detailed story.

      Shel

    4. This early paddler was very impressed with the quality and power of the competing ‘freight haulers.’ It would be enjoyable to have them or any others participate in the early paddle and watch the island come alive with morning. It is quite special. 1i

    5. Thats an idea! I getup rther early. Any other freight haulers want to try this?
There is a full moon on the 9th.

Passover and easter Time1 I’m looking for a crew!

      ‘ON THE ISLAND’

We like to paddle out and watch the whales,
it makes us cheer when they wave their tails,

On the Island, we paddle island style,
from the beach into the ocean, in the ocean on the leeward side,

All the paddlers in the boat, we paddle real nice,
We could paddle all day and party the night,

On the Island, we paddle island style,
from the beach into the ocean, in the ocean on the leeward side,

Sometimes we go out and paddle at night,
it’s always so fun when the moon is so bright,

On the Island, we paddle island style,
from the beach into the ocean, in the ocean on the leeward side,

Pink Paddlers in the boat, we paddle for fun,
we paddle and laugh out under the sun,

On the Island, we paddle island style,
from the beach into the ocean, in the ocean on the leeward side,

On the Island, we paddle island style,
from the beach into the ocean, in the ocean on the leeward side.

    8. Bonnie Kos and I went to paddle on Sunday and found that the “bench box” did not have the lock on. To our surpriase money was still in the file box. I put a new lock on later that day. I also noted that the rakes were not locked up and the new red broom that I bought the week before was gone.

Does anyone know how this occured. The lock “removed”! The rakes not locked up!
      Shel

    9. Aloha,
I don’t know who planned the paddle down to Kam 1 this a.m.; GREAT JOB/GREAT PADDLE. Also, thanks for the perfect conditions.

      Aloha Bob and David,

Thank you for your generous donation to the American Cancer Society. You guys are great!

      Mahalo,

      Aloha,

We were touched by Reverend (Kahu) Alapaki Terry thoughtfulness and generosity of his contribution.

    12. Hi…I´m very happy because I´m enjoy paddling is very fun and all the members that I´ve knew are very friendly, is very important to me cause I´m new member and I´m new here in this beutifull Island far away of my Country.
Please I want Carlos´email to contact him and Gloria. Mahalo.

    13. Is there a list of current members that captains can look at to see if someone has signed a waiver. I belive that there might be one or two paddlers that have not paid dues and signed waivers and I don’t want them in my canoe.
      Mahalo,
      Skip Snyder

      Aloha all,

My name is Keith Pagan and am a new member to the Maui Canoe Club. I am aware of the weekday morning paddles and the occasional weekend paddles. I was wondering if anyone ever goes out around sunset, barring wind and weather? I would also like to know if there are paddles that specifically focus on technique? As I said, I am new and would Love to improve my paddling.

      Mahalo.

    15. Hi Keith,

We have not really gone out at sunset, although we certainly could. This is mostly due to weather. Normally the trade winds would still be blowing strong enough at that time to make it a less than pleasurable experience. Now with our recent lighter wind regime in place would be a good time for this though.

We have done several Moonlight paddles during full moon periods.

As the club’s “Special Events” coordinator I will try to get a special Sunset paddle set up when I see that light winds are forecast.

Regarding paddling techniques, you happened to join the club after we had a series of classes during the winter on fundamental paddling techniques, stroker training, and captain training. We normally hold these in the winter while our “snowbirds” are on island to allow the maximum number of club members to take advantage of them.

    16. Has the club ever been part of the Na Pali canoe challenge?

Is there a way we can?

      Mahalo,
      Keith

    17. Aloha all: Can anyone help me with a garage/carport for my yellow 1955 ford pickup? We won’t be back to Maui until May 2010 and I hate to leave it outside that long. I will pay cash money for some place to store it.
      Mahalo

    18. Aloha all:
Sorry to have left so abruptly without getting a chance to say a proper good-bye. I paddled Monday the 10th, but Tuesday and Wed. were so rainy I didn’t even come up to the club. Then I departed on Thursday. We have faculty meetings this week, then shcool begins on Monday the 24th
Thanks so much to all who paddled with me–I had a great summer as always.

    19. Just curious….. What happened to the publication of some 300 canoe names in Hawaii?

I had also appended an offer to provide information regarding the identification of 3 different Malia designs.

      David

    20. I have the list saved on my computer for future reference. It should come in handy when we get new canoes to avoid double naming.

      Shel

    21. Speaking of canoe names, I was thinking it might be a nice idea if we listed our canoe names and meanings somewhere.

    22. I will be over on Kauai for a few days. Anyone know a club over there I can paddle with?

      Mahalo,
      Keith

    23. This is a big thank you to Shel and the two guys who put up a canoe left on the beach this morning.

We saw the canoe on the beach while in the only 8:30am canoe that went out this morning. We thought we were going to have to put it up when we came in. Luckily for us, and the captain who left their canoe down, three helpful souls put it up for them. I could see one was Shel and he had two other guys with him.

I don’t understand how captains can leave their canoes without putting them up. What I keep hearing is “I thought” or “I assumed that someone was taking it back out.” How does one leave the beach without knowing for sure?

    24. On Manday 2/1/2010, two provisional paddlers (Steve and Camilla) went out for the first time at 7:30. Attached is a link to some video Steve took while we were out. Some very nice whale shots, and an under water shot of a huge honu that pasted right under the canoe. FYI both (Steve and Camilla not the whale and honu)are strong paddlers and will likely join.
